With its population of 140.000 Zaanstad is the fifteenth largest city in the Netherlands. This region has an industrial tradition for more than four hundred years, with many industrial monuments along the River Taan as silent witnesses. During the l7th century, the Zaan Region was one of the world's most important industrial regions. Tsar Peter the Great came in 1697 toTaandam to learn about shipbuilding.

The food industry( including the large cocoa industry)is still prominent and Forbo Krommenie is the world's largest manufacturer of linoleum. The international retail concern A hold grew into the Taan Region's leading company. There are about 7.500 companies in Zaanstad, providing for more than 52.000 iobs.

Taanstad has seaports in the North Sea canal, which connects the North Sea with the Amsterdam seaports. The Zaanstad seaPofts are part of the Greater Amsterdam Area. The North sea canal is one of the most important industrial areas in the Netherlands. Zaanstad's seaports are directly linked with those of Amsterdam, Beverwiik and Ijmuiden and of course the North Sea. Furthermore, Zaanstzd has a good connection, by rail, road and water, with Schiphol Airport and the rest of the Netherlands'
